Homemade Hanging Boot Shaper (DIY)

This season tall boots are incredibly fashionable. Boot shapers keep tall boots organized and reduce creases, but it are not cheap. A hanging boot shaper costs at least $10 for one pair. This blog shows how I made mine for $1.33 each.

Supplies Needed:
  • Cardboard
  • Knee High Sock (3 pack for $4)
  • Strong Tape (clear white packing, duck, etc)
  • Metal Hanger (hello dry cleaners!)
  • Scissors
  • Pen/Pencil/Marker
  • Pliers

Step 1: Outline the boot (bigger is ok, cardboard can be trimmed, not enlarged)
Step 2: Test out the cardboard insert fit and trim where necessary. Quite literally the Achilles heel of this design is the heel. The shaper doesn't fall out because the heel juts out after the ankle. I ultimately ended up snipping the toes because it was harder to get the insert in and out and I needed the sock material over the top than the toes.

Step 3: Trim the top

Step 4: Duplicate. For the insert on the right the cardboard had a horizontal fold. This needed to be mended otherwise the insert would flop over, defeating our purpose. I taped another piece of cardboard to make it sturdier.

Step 5: Straighten the hanger. Use the pliers to make the ends as straight as possible.

Step 6: Frame hanger onto the cardboard inserts using tape and muscle. Be mindful of the ultimate way in which you want the hook to face. If unsure, you can always twist it when you are done.

Step 7: Pick a sock. I founded the funkiest socks for this, I mean, why not? These socks are stretch cotton knee high and the boots are extended calf.

Step 8: Cover cardboard insert with sock. With some finesse I was able to wiggle them up. For extra padding you could probably use bubble sheets or some sort of other cushioned sheet.
